The design of the Gerda residential care home is the outcome of a quest to establish the ideal relationship between a compact, energy-efficient building and the need to create a small-scale residential environment. The central open areas in the compact building are indispensable as they draw in sufficient air and light into the central area. The patios really have added value, and the experience is not just limited to the ground floor level thanks to the spiral-shaped, three-dimensional design. This dynamic has also been used in the design of the individual rooms. The design also found a creative solution for the lost “corner” of the sanitary unit, designing a quarter circle which can be fully opened for care, enlarging the room by up to 8%.
